Pika vs Luma vs Runway: Real Cost Per Usable Second in 2026

The cheapest generated second is not automatically the cheapest finished shot. Compare each provider by billing unit, output duration, retries and the share of clips you would actually keep.

Pricing note: plan names, credits and model availability change quickly. Provider figures are reference points; retry and keeper-rate examples are NotCheapAI planning assumptions.

The usable-second math

Start with generated cost = provider rate multiplied by clip duration. Then calculate usable cost = generated cost multiplied by the average number of attempts needed for one accepted clip. Keep editing, voice, storage and subscription fees in separate rows.

A five-second test that needs three attempts is fifteen generated seconds for one usable five-second result. That is why a slightly higher generation price can still win if it produces fewer unusable takes.

Pika, Luma and Runway

ProviderBilling realityBest comparison question
PikaSubscription and feature-specific access; exact output capacity depends on the selected mode and current plan. How many accepted short clips does the allowance produce?
LumaModel and surface determine duration, resolution and credit use; app and API economics should not be mixed. Is the quoted rate for the exact model and output mode?
RunwayCredits vary by model and generation mode, with separate web-app and API systems. Are you budgeting Turbo, a higher-cost model, or editing features?

Do not turn a consumer credit balance into a dollar-per-second quote unless the provider defines the conversion for the exact product surface. Record the source date and leave ambiguous rows unresolved.

What the finished workflow costs

Budget the accepted clip, not the demo. Add retries, review time, editing, captions, voiceover, storage and any plan minimum. If a provider offers a free allowance, treat it as test capacity until commercial rights, watermark rules and expiry are confirmed.

Common questions

Which provider is cheapest?

There is no universal winner. Measure accepted clips from the same prompt set and apply your own retry rate.

Can app credits be compared with API prices?

Only when the provider documents an equivalent unit, model and output mode. Otherwise keep the rows separate.

Should every second of a Short be AI-generated?

No. A mixed workflow can use generated inserts, real footage, stills and editing. Compare the cost of the finished deliverable.
