Ideogram vs Leonardo AI vs Midjourney: Real AI Image Cost per 1,000 Usable Images in 2026

The short answer: the price of an image generator is quoted per generation, and the price you pay is per usable image. With 20% of generations usable, five images are generated for every one kept, and with variations, upscales and edits added, the effective multiplier is 6.5 times the per-generation cost at a 20% success rate, 3.5 times at 50% and 2.75 times at 80%. On the reported and published plan rates, that turns a per-1,000-generations cost of about $27 on Midjourney fast time, $20–$60 on Ideogram 4.0 (Turbo to Quality, at Plus credit prices) and $10–$14 on Leonardo's token basis into $73–$173, $55–$390 and $28–$91 per 1,000 usable images. Midjourney's Relax mode, Leonardo's unlimited standard-model generations and Ideogram's unlimited slow credits change the marginal cost to waiting time and the plan floor, not to zero cost.

What each vendor bills

Midjourney (REPORTED, from Midjourney documentation as summarized by third parties, July 2026). You buy GPU time, not images. Basic $10 a month (3.3 fast hours, no Relax mode), Standard $30 (15 fast hours, unlimited Relax for images), Pro $60 (30 hours, Stealth mode) and Mega $120 (60 hours), with annual billing 20% lower. Extra fast time is $4 an hour on any plan, and unused fast hours do not roll over. A standard image on the current model costs about 0.8 GPU minutes (older pages say about one minute), and an HD image about 1.3 minutes; upscales and video consume more. The effective rate is $2 an hour on Standard, Pro and Mega and $3.03 on Basic. Companies with more than $1 million in gross annual revenue must use Pro or Mega, and private generation requires Pro. There is no official API.

Ideogram (OFFICIAL, Ideogram plans and credit documentation). Free (10 slow credits a week, public outputs). Plus is $20 a month ($15 a month equivalent billed annually) with 1,000 priority credits; Pro is $60 ($42 equivalent annually) with 3,500; Team is $30 a month, or $20 per user billed annually, with 1,500 credits per user. Basic is a legacy plan and is no longer available to new buyers. Plus and Pro also include unlimited slow credits. Top-ups are $4 for 150 credits on Plus and $4 for 250 credits on Pro and Team. Priority credits expire every billing cycle. Credits per image depend on the model and speed tier: Ideogram 4.0 costs 1 credit per image on Turbo, 2 on Balanced and 3 on Quality; Ideogram 3.0 costs 2 credits per four images on Turbo, 4 on Default and 6 on Quality (0.5, 1 and 1.5 credits per image). This article uses Ideogram 4.0 Turbo, Balanced and Quality as the primary comparison. Priced at plan credit rates, a credit is $0.020 on Plus ($20 ÷ 1,000) and $0.0171 on Pro ($60 ÷ 3,500), and $0.0267 or $0.016 when bought as a top-up on Plus or Pro.

Leonardo (REPORTED). Paid plans start at about $12 a month (Essential), $30 (Premium, 25,000 tokens) and $60 (Ultimate, 60,000 fast tokens), add commercial rights, and include unlimited relaxed generation on standard models. The free tier (150 tokens a day) is non-commercial. On a strict token basis, images were reported at about $0.01–$0.014 each. A separate pay-as-you-go API exists, with a $5 non-expiring starter credit. Token costs per model and per upscale were not captured (QUOTE-ONLY / UNKNOWN).

The multiplier model

The success rates are ILLUSTRATIVE: 20%, 50% and 80% of generations usable. Each usable image also needs one upscale or variation and half an edit on average (1.5 extra generation units per usable image, ILLUSTRATIVE).

Formulas: generations needed = usable images ÷ success rate; total units = generations + 1.5 × usable images; cost per 1,000 usable images = cost per 1,000 units × (1 ÷ success rate + 1.5).

Success rateGenerations per usable imageTotal units per usable image

Generation cost per 1,000 generated images

BasisCost per 1,000 generated images
Midjourney fast time at $2 an hour (0.8 GPU minutes each)$26.67
Midjourney fast time at the $4 an hour top-up rate$53.33
Ideogram 4.0 Turbo (1 credit), Plus / Pro plan credit price$20.00 / $17.14
Ideogram 4.0 Balanced (2 credits), Plus / Pro$40.00 / $34.29
Ideogram 4.0 Quality (3 credits), Plus / Pro$60.00 / $51.43
Ideogram 4.0 Turbo at top-up prices, Plus / Pro$26.67 / $16.00
Ideogram 3.0 Default (1 credit per image), Plus / Pro$20.00 / $17.14
Ideogram slow queue (Plus or Pro), marginal cost$0 beyond the plan fee, at the cost of waiting
Leonardo, token basis$10.00–$14.00

Priority generation and slow-queue generation have different economics. Priority credits are a metered cost, while unlimited slow credits on Plus and Pro turn the marginal cost into queue time and leave only the plan fee.

Usable asset cost

Cost per 1,000 usable images, the same at 1,000 or 10,000 usable images because these are marginal rates:

Basis20% success50% success80% success
Midjourney fast at $2 an hour$173$93$73
Midjourney fast at $4 an hour$347$187$147
Ideogram 4.0 Turbo, Plus / Pro credits$130 / $111$70 / $60$55 / $47
Ideogram 4.0 Balanced, Plus / Pro credits$260 / $223$140 / $120$110 / $94
Ideogram 4.0 Quality, Plus / Pro credits$390 / $334$210 / $180$165 / $141
Leonardo, token basis$65–$91$35–$49$28–$39

At a 20% success rate, the usable-asset cost is 6.5 times the generation cost; at 80% it is 2.75 times. Rejection rate does more to the bill than plan choice within a vendor, and speed tier does as much on Ideogram: Quality costs three times Turbo per image at every success rate.

Subscription totals at a 50% success rate

Fixed monthly plans change the answer. At a 50% success rate, 1,000 usable images need 3,500 generation units and 10,000 need 35,000 units. On Ideogram 4.0 those units are credits multiplied by the tier's credits per image.

Basis1,000 usable images10,000 usable images
Midjourney, fast time only (46.7 hours; 466.7 hours)$127–$157 (Pro or Standard plus $4 top-ups), or $120 on Mega$1,747–$1,837
Midjourney, Relax mode on Standard, Pro or Mega$30, $60 or $120, at the cost of queue time$30, $60 or $120, at the cost of queue time
Ideogram 4.0 Turbo, priority (3,500 credits; 35,000)$60 (Pro)$564 (Pro plus 126 top-ups of 250 credits)
Ideogram 4.0 Balanced, priority (7,000; 70,000)$116 (Pro plus 14 top-ups)$1,124
Ideogram 4.0 Quality, priority (10,500; 105,000)$172 (Pro plus 28 top-ups)$1,684
Ideogram, slow queue on Plus or Pro$20 (Plus) or $60 (Pro), at the cost of waiting$20 (Plus) or $60 (Pro), at the cost of waiting
Leonardo, token basis$35–$49 in token value against a $30–$60 plan$350–$490 in token value

Midjourney's unlimited Relax mode and Ideogram's unlimited slow credits make the 10,000-image case cost the plan floor if the images can wait in the queue (Midjourney reports 0–30 minutes per job; Ideogram's slow-queue wait was reported to fluctuate with load). If they cannot, priority credits or fast time are the driver. Leonardo's unlimited relaxed generation on standard models similarly lowers the marginal cost for ordinary images. Ideogram Team seats at $20 per user annually (1,500 credits each) are not in the table.

Commercial-use and privacy requirements

  • Midjourney: Pro or Mega is required for companies above $1 million in gross annual revenue, which sets a floor of $60 a month regardless of volume. Stealth (private) generation requires Pro or Mega.
  • Ideogram: free outputs are public and cannot be deleted; paid plans allow private generation. Commercial use is allowed on paid tiers.
  • Leonardo: commercial rights start on paid plans; the free tier is non-commercial.

Sensitivity

  1. Success rate. Moving from 80% to 20% multiplies the usable-asset cost 2.4 times on the same plan.
  2. Ideogram speed tier. Moving from Turbo to Quality triples credits per image (1 to 3 on Ideogram 4.0), and priority versus slow-queue use decides whether credits are spent at all.
  3. Fast versus Relax on Midjourney. The top-up rate of $4 an hour is twice the effective plan rate of $2 an hour.
  4. Edits and upscales. Removing the 1.5 extra units per usable image lowers the multiplier from 3.5 to 2.0 at a 50% success rate.

Budgeting traps

  • Counting generations as deliverables. Every rejected image is a full-price generation.
  • Credit expiry. Ideogram priority credits and Midjourney fast hours reset monthly.
  • Model and tier changes. Ideogram 4.0 Quality costs three credits per image against one credit per image on 3.0 Default, at the same plan price.
  • Team seats. Each additional creator needs a subscription on Midjourney and Ideogram Team is per member, and none of the totals above include seats.
