Grok and SuperGrok 2026: What Are You Actually Paying For?
Grok has three separate ways to pay: a Grok subscription at grok.com, an X subscription that includes some Grok benefits, and a metered developer API. They are not interchangeable. For ordinary chat, start with the free plan. If its limits interrupt your work, the next clear Grok-specific price on xAI's plan page is SuperGrok at $30/month. If you already value X's paid features, X Premium+ starts at $40/month on the US web checkout and includes SuperGrok access. API tokens are billed separately.

The lowest X subscription is not automatically the cheapest way to get useful Grok. X Premium's value is a bundle of X features and increased Grok access. If the point of paying is higher Grok limits across its own products, compare SuperGrok with Premium+ rather than assuming the $8 X tier includes everything. X says Premium+ includes SuperGrok, while xAI explains that an X subscription must be linked to the right Grok account.
The limit behind the monthly headline
Paid Grok access is not a fixed number of unlimited prompts. xAI describes a shared weekly usage pool across Chat, Imagine, Voice and Build. A short chat message draws less from that pool than a high-quality video or long coding task. The reset time and percentage used appear in the account's Usage settings. When the included pool is exhausted, paid features pause until reset unless you buy extra usage or move to a higher tier; free Chat and Voice limits remain separate. Extra Usage Credits can currently be bought on the web, starting at $5, and xAI says their cost per action is higher than usage included in a subscription.
That makes a subscription decision dependent on which features consume your allowance. Someone who mostly asks short questions may get through a month on Free or SuperGrok. Someone generating video daily can exhaust the same nominal plan much sooner. xAI does not publish a stable message-count allowance for every plan and feature, so a precise "prompts per dollar" claim would be misleading.
Grok 4.7 is current, but API access is a different purchase
xAI announced Grok 4.7 on September 21, 2026 and made it available through the Grok API and Grok Build. Its consumer plan comparison still names Grok 4.6 in the SuperGrok feature list. Do not infer from the API release that every consumer plan has identical 4.7 access: check the model picker on your account. The API model ID is grok-4.7; its documented context window is 500,000 tokens.

For models with long-context pricing, all tokens in a request use the higher tier once its prompt reaches the threshold. grok-build-0.1 has a 256K context window; grok-4.7 has 500K. The US regional API endpoint costs 10% more than the global endpoint for Grok 4.7: $2.20 input, $0.55 cached input and $6.60 output below 200K prompt tokens. Tool use, storage and other API services can add charges. The $30 SuperGrok subscription does not replace metered API billing.
What the API costs in actual work
These examples use uncached text tokens, standard global processing, requests below the 200K long-context threshold, and no paid tools. They are API estimates, not deductions from a consumer subscription.

The last row is not a single 10M-token prompt. It is a month of smaller requests. For Grok 4.7, the arithmetic is 10 x $2 input plus 2 x $6 output = $32. If each request crosses 200K prompt tokens, the applicable token rate doubles; the same monthly token total would then cost $64 before any tools or regional premium. Caching only reduces the input portion that actually qualifies as cached.
Which payment makes sense?
- Occasional questions: try Free first; no API account is needed for personal chat.
- Regular Grok use without an X purchase: SuperGrok's $30/month is the cleanest published paid starting point, but inspect the weekly usage meter before renewing.
- You already pay for X: compare the incremental cost of Premium+ against SuperGrok; Premium alone has increased Grok limits but a different entitlement.
- You build an application: budget from API token, tool, region and long-context rates. Consumer subscriptions are not prepaid API capacity.
